Getting to know Kelly

Many of you have most likely seen Kelly around D&D over the past few months- and we figured it was about time we formally introduced her! She specializes in balayage and tap in extensions, she's a sweetheart, lovely to chat with, and a great addition to the family!

What made you get into hair dressing?

Since a little girl, always knew. I had always heard about Blanche Macdonald and I knew right away that it was my school, that was where I wanted to go.

What is balayage?

Balayage is a more “live in color”, it’s so seamless. You can transform someones look. You’re literally creating, you’re painting. I think that’s why it’s my favorite.

How long have you been a hair dresser?

I graduated a year ago from Blanche Macdonald.

How did you find out about Darling and Dapper?

I’ve been working here almost 5 months, I used to commute to Yaletown everyday from Mission. A coworker at my previous salon had mentioned D&D when she found out i was leaving. As soon as I walked in I fell in love, I knew I wanted to work here.

What should the D&D readers know about you?

I’m a girly nerd- game of thrones fan- my favorite part is whenever Khaleesi is showing mad girl power. I’m addicted to shopping, I love animals- I have a German Shepard of my own. I’m a country girl, I’m easy going I guess.

Any hidden talents?

I’m told I have a really good voice. (*Note- all the girls in the shop agreed when Kelly answered this one)

What would you be doing if you weren’t a hair dresser?

Surprisingly I would’ve studied psychology- I would’ve trained to be a psychiatric nurse

What’s your craziest hair story, on either you or a client?

Well I chopped off my hair and dyed it bright green. On a client, I dyed their hair in a hot pink balayage.

Is there anything that you haven't done yet, but would like to?

I would like to try doing a rainbow balayage on someone.

Thank you for reading this months blog post, make sure to check out our social media and keep up with events, specials, and creations of the girls at D&D!

Green Circle Salons

Darling and Dapper Salon is a green circle salon, sounds cool- but what exactly is it?

Being a green salon means that we reduce 70-90 percent of what is sent to the landfill. Did you know that hair is really absorbent? Well the hair clippings that are swept up at the end of your appointment can actually be donated to help oil spill clean up efforts.

Green Circle Salons is able to help us reduce the chemicals that get washed down the drain, reuse the foils that your hair dresser uses, they are rinsed and recycled, and chemicals are sent off to a chemical waste plant.

Darling and Dapper wanted to be apart of something that didn't just focus on using LED lighting, and making sure to recycle their bottles of product. Being apart of Green Circle takes that to the next level.

Why Nova Lash

Nova Lash's "mission statement" if you will is "no lash left behind", the idea that you want to get the most out of your lash extensions.

Darling and Dapper chose Nova Lash because it isn't like other lash extensions. While it is suggested to stay away from oil based products, it is not necessary. Speaking from personal experience, I am two weeks in to having these lashes and I have found that I have more left on my lashes than I expected.

When you come into the salon for your lashes, you are greeted as usual but the lovely ladies and whichever dog might be visiting that day. Then you are taken into a separate room, given a blanket, calming music, and a heating pad for your back. Now this has to be one of the most relaxing experiences, if I wasn't working I might've just fallen asleep.

If you have never received extensions before, I will explain what goes down. So first, make sure you show up to your appointment fresh faced. You don't want any make up on, or around your eyes. Next, to protect your lower lashes, there is an eye patch placed to stick them down. Then the process starts. For your first appointment, it's about an hour to glue the extensions on, but as you continue getting them filled it won't take as long because your technician won't be starting from scratch.

I love lash extensions because of how awake I look. I can just wake up and feel more or less presentable (assuming my hair isn't a nightmare). I find I wear less make up, and my skin starts to look better because I'm wearing make up less often. However, when I do wear make up, I don't have to worry about using an oil based remover to get off my eye make up.

So far, I expect these lashes to last about another three weeks (which means five weeks total), but keep in mind it follows your natural lash growth. If you have a fast lash cycle, your fills will happen more frequently than someone who has a slower lash growth.

Also a PSA before I finish up this post, make sure you do your research. Just because it's a good deal, doesn't mean you should try it out. Please look into where you are going, look at past experience, and don't go in clueless. I (of course) recommend the lovely Darling and Dapper ladies for all of your beauty needs, but Vanessa is great at what she does. She has been a technician for six years now, and makes sure you have a comfortable experience.

Thanks as always for keeping up with us at Darling and Dapper, and we will see you soon.

Yours truly,

I Luv It Naturals

I Luv It Naturals (ILIN) is a brand Darling and Dapper carries, and is made in our very own Mission, B.C. The owner, Marie Van de Leur, started the brand after realizing how much our skin absorbs while watching a commercial advertising lotion. Marie went into her bathroom and took a look at the ingredients on the very same lotion, only to realize they weren’t great for your body. So she started her research, and found that the ingredients that were in deodorant had a long term risk of things like cancer. That’s not something you want your body to be absorbing (duh).

For four months, Marie worked and experimented, trying to find the right formula to keep armpits fresh during a busy day. I Luv It Naturals has no aluminum, parabens, phthalates, none of the bad stuff. ILIN uses essential oils for their scents, the use things like cocoa butter because it is a great moisturizer, arrowroot- which acts as an anesthetic, and a few others you can find listed on their website. It has been tested on hockey players, firefighters, business sharks, kids, moms, and everyone in between.

Currently, I Luv It is working on some new scents to bring to everyone, and I can’t wait to test them out.

I personally haven’t made the switch to natural deodorant, but Zena has and loves it!

The Minds Behind the D&D Blog

Hello Darling!

It's been a year since Darling and Dapper opened, and to celebrate we did two things; started a blog, and we're throwing a party! This last year has been a learning experience, and we wanted to show our appreciation for our lovely guests. Make sure to keep up with our Instagram to find out details on the event!

Welcome to our Darling and Dapper blog, we wanted a place for you to come and find everything you need to know about our salon, and our services. We will be giving you our best tips and tricks for things like how to make your hair color last, care for your lash extensions, skincare tips, and aftercare for microblading. We wanted to educate on what services we offer, through personal and customer experience.

We thought it was best to start was by telling the readers a little bit about ourselves. Zena is the lovely hair connoisseur,  and I am Maddie the local blogger and beauty fanatic.

Zena was forced into hair styling by her mother, and it was the greatest decision her mother ever made for her. It very quickly became a passion, and now her full time career. Zena and I met over a year ago, while she was doing my hair. The miracle worker managed to bleach my full head of hair without killing it completely. After the salon had opened, Zena had the idea for this blog, where I happily stepped in to help.

The salon is family run and green focused. They like to support local businesses, and embrace individuality, and everything pretty.  The main goal at Darling and Dapper is to create a personal connection with everyone that walks in the door. Everything about our salon is very personal, from the name to the color scheme. The salon was opened on February 25th, 2017, and since then Zena has done plenty of hair, learned how to run a business, all while balancing a home life.

Zena used to educate for Kevin Murphy, traveling around the lower mainland to teach other stylists. She has taught for about a year. She's worked in multiple fashion shows including, Vancouver's Alternative Fashion Week, London Alexander, and Kevin Murphy.

I am Maddie, I am a beauty and fashion blogger from the Fraser Valley. I have been blogging for about a year now and will be going to school for my Communication degree. I always go to Zena for pro hair and beauty advice, as she researches everything before using it. I am excited to be blogging for the lovely ladies at Darling and Dapper, this next year is going to be a good one! There are lots of goodies in store.

Yours Truly,
